Topic - JAS 39 Gripen / Super JAS

Image 1: Swedish JAS Gripen over Libya in 2011. The Swedish air force hasn’t been involved in any conflict since the UN missions in Congo, 1956, (I don’t count hunting Russian submarines in the 80s) but took part in the UN operations in Libya last year.

Images 2 & 3: A fictional picture of Super JAS (JAS 39 Gripen E, a version still in development).

Nice modeling & rendering.
Very nice, looks awesome.
I've always admired your work, Anders, and this one is another winner. Excellent modeling and renders! Nice one.

Many thanks!

This one was a bugger to UV-map. Not very difficult but time consuming. It has a lot of "oragnic" areas that had to be relaxed and aligned. I like to keep my UV-islands aligned so that I easily can paint panel lines and rivets. Here's how it turned out:

For this model I'm using two 4x4k textures for each channel (diffuse, bump and spec):

I have some work in progress images on my site if too:

Really beautiful work! Love the final renders! The texturing work is just sublime.

They'd really enjoy these renders over at

Thanks for sharing the uv setup pics.
Nice work, Anders! There have been lot of airplane models shown on this forum, but what I particularly like about yours is that you haven't gone overboard with exaggerated details and textures that make the others look a bit cartoonish. On modern jet aircraft, details like rivets and wear patterns on exterior surfaces are barely visible, and keeping these low key as you have, makes for a more realistic rendering.
Nice job!
Your work always improves with each new model Anders. Textures look great, thanks for sharing. Well done.
Very nice work :)
Thanks for posting your textures, they are very informative :)

Cheers,

Rob

Yes it is very tempting to exaggerate those details when trying to make something look more realistic. I've fallen into that trap pretty often when wanting to force all the details to be visible.

I still like exaggerating when I do metallic surfaces though.. :)

Yes, but then it won't look real. Nothing screams CGI more than heavy handed texturing.

By the way, have you ever done a model of the Saab Draken? It may be the coolest looking jet fighter of all time. :-)

Very impressive work, thanks for sharing the details!
Wunderschnitzel!
Wow - absolutely fantastic work! The textures are great and the play of light that you've achieved across the surfaces is outstanding!

That is an awesome looking plane. Looks like an F1 car mated with an ICBM
Fantastic Work! and @Andrewward, those jets have a great design!
yes the SAAB Draken (meaning "The Dragon") is a pretty sweet looking aircraft. There is one in a museum not far away from where I live so maybe I'll check it out and model it some day!
Really like your work Anders.
Outstanding, as usual.

...and here's the last picture in the series.
This is the unmanned drone version (in development according to rumours) of the Gripen.

All fun and games until it becomes self-aware :) Absolutely amazing work!
Killer work!
Yeah man, you're models are great, but your surfacing skills are amazing. Nice work.
