Topic - Farscape Pilot

A commission which im making, well almost made ;) just some finishing touches left on console and DRD. The character is a pilot of space ship from sci-fi TV series Farscape. Not much to be said except its my first bigger sculpting project done in Modo 501 so it was a bit of a struggle at the beginning because i didn't sculpt anything decent so far, besides test blobs of course ;)
That's pretty amazing. One of my favorite shows of any genre. Cool to see Modo's sculpting chops being shown here. My first though was "Z-Brush + Modo".

My first thought too! ZBrush and modo.....

Very well done! Excellent sculpt!

This is brilliant! And a cool mini flashback for me, I used to love that show. The muppets and animatronics are what made it rock.

How did you manage to deal with symmetry issues in modo's sculpting? I find it often fails on me. Then all I can do is freeze the displacements, cut the mesh in half, mirror it, and start sculpting again on a far denser base mesh.

Anyway, its awesome. And I'm stealing it.
Thanks guys and girls ;) I must admit its too bad that they don't make sci-fi like Farscape any more maybe someday, at least i had a good excuse to watch it all over again :D.

As for Z-brush i did try it somewhere in middle of the project because sculpting on higher levels is still a bit choppy in modo especially switching between SDS levels or maybe i threw too much polys at it ;), any way i didn't get too far in Zbrush too due to annoying interface, especially navigation in viewport, and since i've done most of the work already in Modo i said to my self if could start it in Modo then you could/should finish it in Modo too, besides i didn't had time to learn new tools and workflow.

Im definitely gonna try out Zbrush in my spare time but if it comes to buying it i'll wait for Zbrush 5 with 64bit support.

Unfortunately i had to deal with symmetry issue too, my workaround was to sculpt to certain point then retopology (it helps to reduce poly count as well), mirror it and so on until i reach a point when i've started to sculpt wrinkles and all the small details but in that case its better to work without symmetry to avoid unnatural symmetrical look.
If it's a comish for a toy / bust then you might need to go through Z-Brush anyway though. Modo can't output the STLs needed for production with frozen displacements, bumps and all. I looked at it often but what blocked me was that the UI was designed by comedians.

Congrats! Very nice modo sculpt!
Ok. As soon as I saw Pilot in the gallery thumbnails, I had a little nerd-squee meltdown. This is awesome.

I remember back in the day getting a good Farscape wormhole effect in 3dsmax, and eventually modeling the Module to go through it.

Might be time for a re-watch. And maybe some more modelling. =D

Yes its for 3d printing i can get away with obj file but still i need to freeze meshes the torso and top of console are easy ones but head with all those wrinkles and rusty/grainy part of console could cause some problems during export.

Thanks, Farscape is definitely worth the re-watch and there is so many great characters and props to choose from for sculpting or modelling exercise so go for it ;).

Small update: console is done only DRD left to do.

so go for it ;)

Thanks well it was done with 3dprinting in mind so i didn't make uv's etc. but who knows it'll be fun project to texture and render.

Wow ... what a flashback. Very well done! Reminds me ... I need to dig out my old Scorpius model and finish it in Modo (it was started in Silo) :)

"No, no ... Crichton ... I need that worm technology that's inside your head!" Love it :D

Sweet!

Tempted to start an item list for Farscape sets/props/characters -- see how quickly we can all start populating it. =D

Thanks glad you like it. You've got nice Scorpius there good base mesh so all you need to do is have some fun with Modo sculpting tools ;).

So you want to make special Farscape Modo bashing kit? ;) i can't promise anything in terms of contribution but i was thinking for some time of Aeryn Sun action figure, and its about time to make my first humanoid model ;)
Suppose so, yeah. Beyond main characters, I could start going through some episodes looking for interesting props, sets. Start getting the catalog list together, at least.

No guarantee of completion or even interest, but... hey... good excuse to rewatch. =D

Interested to try using some fur/hair on Chiana's costume. modo's hair might not be ready for most characters, but it seems perfect for that colored/frosted/teased-to-the-ceiling look prevalent in Farscape.

I've got a little lull time. Will likely start going through episodes later tonight.
Did you CATCH the Sci fi channel 20th anniversary, it had a nice section on
Farscape.
I missed it (don't have catv anymore). And... I'd love to watch that. Seems like it's blocked like crazy where I am, though. =(
