Topic - Dreamworks "Dragons: Riders of Berk" TV Series

This is some of the work I did on DreamWorks "Dragons: Riders of Berk" TV Series.
They already previewed episodes 1 and 2 and the series premiere is going to on September 4th on Cartoon Network.

All 3 of these characters that I made came from the original movie "How to Train Your Dragon".
But these characters were made from "Patched NURBS" and were converted to polygons. Because they were patched NURBS first, when you convert them to poly's the spans do NOT line up and there all separate patches of polygons. Plus, they came to us at a "high" poly count and these were going to be made into sub-d's so we had to re-make the characters as a poly cage to be able to turn into a sub-d and we had to UV them.

This is Stormfly.
Started as a Patched NURBS model, then poly model, then brought into modo. When the modeling was done, I took it into ZBrush and made the scales. This render is from modo with normal maps made in ZBrush.

This is Ruffnut.
Started as a Patched NURBS model, then poly model, then brought into modo. When the modeling was done, I took it into modo and ZBrush and made the textures. This render is from modo with no maps.

This is Tuffnut.
Started as a Patched NURBS model, then poly model, then brought into modo. When the modeling was done, I took it into modo and ZBrush and made the textures. This render is from modo with just its normal maps.

Once season one airs, I will be able to show more work that I made in modo. :)

Thanks,

Great work Roger, loved HTTYD and will look forward to seeing the rest of your work.

I tried to watch your demo reel, but doesn't want to work on OSX 10.7 and download link seems to be broken.

Worked for me on 10.7 in both Safari and Firefox.
Great job!
Absolutely fantastic, just watched the first episode the other day and it looks great. Really nice job on the models.
Hey, thanks for ALL you really nice comments!
It's been a fun show to work on but were coming to the end.

Thanks again,
Roger

'but were coming to the end' ~ waH?

Say it isn't so Roger...
I've heard the old DW modelers only working in NURBS. Yikes, what a pain in the ass. Great job, and great patience.

Hey Roger!

Great work on the characters, that must have been a huge pain doing the conversion. Keep posting more stuff when you can show it.
Awesome Roger. Looking great so far! Watched the first episode and enjoyed it.

Cheers

Nice work Roger!! I watched it with my kids the other day, it's a cool show.
Hexebah - Were just about done with season one and there will be season two, but they want to re-use all the assets from season one. There "might" be a few new assets, and some "might" be made here, but they want ALL new 3d assets made overseas.

Zarathustra - Thanks! DreamWorks is one of the last major studios using Patch NURBS. There just starting to switch to sub-d's.

Joel - Thanks dude...it's great hearing from you. How are things at Microsoft?

John - Thanks! I really like the work you do.

Jonathan - Thanks!

That's really rotten. Sorry to hear you've been outsourced.
Time to move overseas then Roger. It's all the rage these days. Companies outsource overseas to companies that import the talent. All they're doing is handing over the keys really.

This job was suppose to last only about 7 months, we were only suppose to make the lead characters/dragons. It's now been over 15 months and we ended having to make most of the proxies for layout and most of the sets and props. It's not all bad......

Here is a sub-d wire-frame screen grab of Stormfly. I thought you might want to see....since "I" like to see the wire-frames. The model is made of all quads.
I have sub-d wire-frame screen grabs of Ruffnut and Tuffnut on my website.

Thanks,

The demo reel works well for me here on OS X and Safari and what a great demo reel! I haven't seen the show yet, but I am looking forward to it. Like others, I loved the movie. It might be my favorite of the CGI cartoons out there. I am not surprised it has already been picked up for a season 2.

Things have been good, some weeks are busier than others. I've been answering modo questions from Mike and Jon lately :)

Good luck with the search, hopefully we see you Seattle again and can grab some pho.
Amazing work to a great movie!
Wow, you worked on some great series. Hats off to a brilliant career, hope you find another cool project so we can see your awesome talent.

Best of Luck!
