Topic - by the river

i put this scene together to (hopefully) showcase the Xfrog plants and trees i recently converted to modo presets.

these were set up and rendered in modo and i used several render passes (including this height map) to add some post effects. i did some colour and levels correction also, though i'm not sure if i went a bit too far (?).

anyway, here they are - late afternoon in the sun, cloudy day, and misty morning.

if you like them, be sure to have a look at THIS.

Great scene!
I like cloudy day, it's very nice.

" i went a bit too far"
Images are very clean and sharp, but It may be appropriate?
Little more dof could help.
WOW!
pretty freakin nice !!! like really nice image !! I could sit in that scene all day watching grass grow!

would you be so kind to outline step by step how you were able to get all those plants in modo !!

I attempted one example plant and I bogged down so bad !

Awesome images. I think I like the first one the best. The distant image adds the the sense of depth.
Great. Has an almost 'Wind in the Willows' feel. Just needs Mr Toad, Mr Rat and Mr Mole.

Indeed very pastoral well done : )
Great images! Nice and peaceful scene. Really draws you in. Picnics come to mind. :)

Nice mood pictures. The bushes are fine, only the trees look odd.
thanks All!

you're absolutely right, and in fact i was supposed to add one to the cloudy ones too, but somehow it got lost in the post processing :o

there are so many trees in the collection so there are a mixture of 'perfect' looking trees and some more random variations. but in hindsight i agree maybe i used too many bendy ones ;)

i imported the presets one at a time (there are about 22 different models in the scene) and immediately placed them in a hidden group. i wanted to paint the plants onto the ground so i could get them exactly where i wanted, but unfortunately there's a bug in the Mesh Paint Replica tool so i couldn't see what i was painted, so i switched to Mesh Paint Instance instead.

in the preferences there's an option to create instances as bounding boxes and i switched this on to keep the viewport nice and light.

that's it really. i then made some final adjustments to the position/scale etc of theplants and made some changes to the materials (added SSS, tweaked parameters and so on).

of course you have to be careful with the models you select. there's no point trying to import 20 multimillion poly models and expecting modo not to choke. these were all medium poly models for mid distance shots.

here's a screenshot but it's a bit boring really as it's just a bunch of boxes...

Great work !

What is that bug with mesh paint replicas ? You can also use the particle paint tool, just be sure that you have 'show vertices' enabled in your viewport visibility options. Also once you have painted particles on the ground you can still edit them with the particle sculpting tools to smudge and move them while keeping them constrained to the ground.

the problem is when using the Mesh Paint Replica tool, you can't see the replicas as they're being painted.

see HERE

but i've since found another problem with the tool. if you select 'Strokes' mode and specify a mesh, it works with the first stroke but then modo changes the specified mesh. i bugged this in 401 and i thought it had been fixed but it seems that it's back.

can you confirm?
Fantastic work! Also a big cudos to you for going through this gigantic task of converting everything!

It is great to see much more assets appearing for modo now!

Now that we have great trees to work with, we desperately need rendertime proxies. I know that there was just too much to do with 601, but please Luxology, give us a really good proxy system for 701!!!

(p.s.: Sorry Sandro to hijack your thread like this...again, great work!)
