Topic - Help me understand The Foundry and Luxology thing

After the annoncement of The Foundry and Luxology joining forces, i guess Modo 701 will feature at least a plug-in for the Foundrys software in Modo.
What i can´t figure out is what the Foundrys software can do for me a Modonaut.
I have only been looking into the Foundrys software today (only seen some tutorials, so haven´t tried it hands-on), but can anyone let me in on what new features this collaboration and how us modouser might benefit (meaning: what we will be able to do that we haven´t been able to do before?)

Thanks
I would personally squeal in delight if Luxology nicely suggested to The Foundry to bring Mari to the Mac :D

(Modo is Mac friendly, hopefully Mari will be someday too).
Nuke is THE go to tool when you want to composite CGI with real video. It has an excellent 3D camera tracker and compositing tools that are simply the best of breed today. Mari is a PTEX editor that allows you to paint and texture your 3D models using projected texture maps. The rest of their tools like Hero and Katana are production workflow tools for large CG production houses with lots of people working on the same project. For my 2 cents, simply a tight workflow integration between Mari, Nuke and Modo would be killer.
Mari was originally written for OSX, it was born there. Weta dropped support when Apple got behind on OpenGL with 10.6. I have been asking the Foundry to bring it back since 10.7 came out.

I remember reading that in an article Jack Greasley posted. I too have been bugging The Foundry about an OSX Mari version. I've bugged them in the forums, their email, and on facebook :P

I hope we see it someday.

.... and it would be nice to see it supported with ATI cards too instead of only NVidia.

Hi,

It is true that Mari was originally developed (for the 1st year or so) on Linux and OS X. We sadly did have to drop OS X support when the version of OpenGL available on Mac wasn't cutting it any more.

To get the performance we do in Mari with we needed certain modern (6 years ago) OpenGL features that OS X did not provide.

OS X is slowly catching up in this space, but they are still VERY behind Windows and Linux and it is very difficult to find out what their roadmap or plans are.

That said, this hasn't gone away for us and we are listening intently to the requests.

We are working with closely ATI and although we don't qualify their cards just yet, Mari can be run on modern FirePro and Radeons with up-to date drivers. We will qualify their cards formally as soon as we can.

Thanks for all of the interest.

We live in interesting times.

:)

To sum up.....save a little more each week in the Modo piggy bank. I think it's going to be worth it.
This is a good question Mads Bangsoe!

I'm asking me if we can expect a great and powerfull particle-system in Modo?

As for the particle system i´m all for that ! Some fluid dynamics would be great too !
But i guess there´s only so much stuff that can go in one new version of Modo, so perhaps we need to wait to 801 for that (hope not though)

My main gig is aircraft modelling and texturing and i figured that Mari might be a great tool for that.

Thanks so much for the info! And yes, its frustrating how behind Apple is with OpenGL (although thankfully they're slowly catching up.). I spam them monthly regarding updated OpenGL so maybe someday they'll get sick of hearing me and work on it ;)
Fusion?Sorry,this is the reality:

Bye bye modo...
Seems modo would be a focal point in this. Wonder if there will be pricing options according to how much you want, if a super-modo is in the works.

I am taking classes, and about to purchase the student license of Nuke.... I own EVERY plugin, and training video that Luxology has put out!!

I would really appreciate if there was a discounted price for modo owners on Nuke or Nuke X for production use...

Currently the price is high for a single user ( I very much appreciate the current price of the product based on the software complexity, requirements for multi platform, and extreme reliability under production situations.....)....

I would whip out my credit card RIGHT NOW to purchase nuke at a discount....

The student license will be great for my classes, but at some point Ill need to sell something!!

Luxology / Foundry????

Thanks for the AWESOMENESS of Modo......

Michael

I'm not sure how you translate "bye bye modo" from that article. It states the same as already mentioned on the various sources available.

Bye bye Modo as we know and love it,Javis Jones.Maybe 801,901 or xx01 version will be better, not 701.Enhanced is not equal to BETTER.Do you need an example?Syntrillium Cool Edit (now Adobe Audition):after acquired by Adobe...ARGH!Only after some versions, really Audition = Cool Edit.Sometimes only after many years do you have THE REAL next version of your loved software...you can buy a softwarehouse in a 1 minute, understand his products philosophy (now your products) need more and more time.So Audition CS6 is THE REAL evolution of Cool Edit, not 3.0 or CS5...maybe we'll love Modo 801,not 701.

I don't know that that is a bad thing. The jump from 501 to 601 was huge. Taking 701 as a step back to provide some incremental improvements and bug fixes to allow proper time for the business and product strategies to flesh themselves out seems the right strategy to me. That is a hell of a lot better than slamming another major jump with an increase risk of difficulties as resources are certain to be spread thin as the melding of the two companies move forward as one. The mindset that every generation not only has to be a home run but a grand slam is a little more than ridiculous.

Yup. Hello.

I'm thinking procedural Shader Tree. Combining Nuke's nodal workflow and bringing some of that into Modo would be very nice.

Any possibilities on this?
