Usually that message is apocalyptic but around these parts it raises spirits. What a mixed up crazy world we live in. So I'm totally slammed with work today. Got to keep it short.

We're still on for May. Things are looking very good.

That's probably all you needed to hear right? ;) OK. Here come the goods.

We added another new tester last week. What can one man do in a weeks time with 201? first of all he brought this project in that he had done previously in another app just to give the modo rendering engine a quick work out. Not bad for a first shot. He indicates render times to be 10x better in modo with SSS than the "Brand X". But of course!

Then he got all crazy and did their logo as a fragrance. What does a VFX shop smell like? It can't be good. But it sure looks pretty!

I want to take a second to show some images of the Pen Tool in action. These days some artists like to do free form sculpting in apps like ZBrush or Mudbox and then lay down a clean topo over the top. Our main man "Gwot" got all crazy with the Pen Tool lately and he says he loves it. In fact he says, "The tool rocks. The results are exactly what you want as you draw." We love you too Gwot.

So here is the base mesh done in modo.

High detail sculpting done in external app.

Using the Pen Tool with Make Quads option on and the Background Constraint Gwot can easily place the new geometry exactly the way he wants for the most efficient poly flow.

And after much Pent Tool love he has his final clean low rez mesh. Cool!

Hey! How about a video? This one just came in from Greg Leuenberger. I like it. This is a reduced version for bandwidth consideration. GO TORRENT!

I read the name BREDEROCK... so the "Brand X" could be most likely Lightwave...

cool update, love it

I honestly can't remember being this excited about a software release in a long, long time. To think that we're now talking weeks not months :-)

I hope when the RTM build clears QA and you send out the "come get it" emails that all the folks at modo go home, take the phones and email clients off the hook and spend some serious down time with friends, family or games consoles
. BTW, any of the modo guys on XBox Live?

i was going to ask the same question. whats the polygon count for the high res head model in Modo?

Hummmm... 10x faster than brand X... I wonder which engine is brand X. Three possible candidates:

1. Lightwave: A usual point of reference around here.
2. Mental Ray: Box-Office GI champion
3. Renderman: Overall Box-Office champion

10x faster than Lightwave is doable, and it would be substantial. I once clocked Mental Ray at about 6 times faster than Lightwave when it cam to GI with volumetric lighting, but it was hard to do a head-to-head comparison.

10x faster than Mental Ray would be awesome, even though Mental Ray is no longer as fast as it once was. SSS is pretty damn slow in Mental Ray. I could see Modo blowing past it.

10x faster than Renderman. Hey, wait, Renderman doesn't do SSS does it? It's scanline not a raytracer?

Horray! Its another great Friday update, the best thing since sliced bread. I like the hand render. I also wonder if they are comparing it to Mental Ray or Lightwave. I like the power of Mental Ray, but it surely is quite complex, I'm hoping modo to be simpiler. Hard to say, and I'm sure EdenFX uses both Maya and Lightwave. Thanks for the update!

first and sec pics, the hand doesn't look likes human skin at all, but kind of plastic. these images make me confuse about modo SSS's quality again.
hope it is not only 10x better of render times, and 10x better of sss quality.

Hey Guys,

Cool that you like my stuff and thanks to Brad for showing it!

By the way...

I am not using Mental Ray, Maya or other stuff...

I am a Lightwaver...

Nothing more to say! ; )

Nice images...although the hand doesnt look so real to me...maybe they wanted a feel like a bmovie or something?

but the logo is very very nice!

It should be a rubber/latex kind of material and it is a B-Movie hand, the Hand of the SciFi-Movie 'Mammoth'...

Most interesting. Though I'm really beginning to wonder: Is there anyone left who isn't on the Beta (apart from me, of course)? Man, that must be one hell of a Beta team.

Brad,

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear things are still on course for May release.

Glass/perfume images are nice, but with regard to the hand images: I know this is a first stab/work in progress/modoneophyte, but am I the only one that thinks the skin looks sort of plastic?

BTW, I'm eager to find out how I'm going to be able to utilize 201 in a rendering workflow. What animation package(s) will be supported? I presume that with EIAS I'll be SOL, but it would be nice to know what WILL be supported. I need to be able to do animation, and once I've been spoiled with it, I doubt that I will ever want to live without modo's renderer...

Edit: AHA! It was intended to look like a B-movie rubber hand! Sorry, your answer was being composed as mine was, too. You just beat me to the punch on your submit... In that case, I'd say you've achieved your objective. It looks like a very real, very rubber hand :D
