I just got back from NAB where we did a round of press meetings. It was actually a great trip and the press is going gaga for 201. In particular they have been blown away by the speed and quality of the renderer and the amazing number of killer images we have from our testers prior to release. It really is impressive. I think this speaks volumes about the ease of use of the render engine for getting beautiful images as well as the skills of our intrepid testers. Good work team!
Here is a little write up from the meeting. Note that we lead the article and get a second mention down where he talks about the core duo chips. Mind share baby. Mind share.
Steve Katz NAB Write Up
Update on 201 development: We have entered the final phase of development wherein all changes must be pre-approved and specific to stability. The testers feedback is that stability has improved dramatically over the past weeks and some people report better stability than 103. Our goal is to have that report from all testers prior to release. We also discovered that two very annoying bugs we had been chasing for some time were actually NVIDIA driver issues. NVIDIA indicates that a fix is on the way and will be in the next driver update. This will not delay release as we have work-arounds for both. One issue is related to dual monitors and can be rectified by setting the card to "Compatibility" mode and the other can be avoided by disabling VBOs in modo. Once the new drivers come out this will simply be a non-issue and since the user can change the settings no modo patch will be necessary. If they release the drivers soon it won't effect anyone. We are pleased that NVIDIA has been so pro-active in their assistance with these issues.
With a week at NAB I have some catching up to do on documentation so I'm going to keep this short. I apologize I don't have several videos for you this week. I'm trying to get to writing as soon as possible. So here you go!

Perhaps you would like to see some pretty pictures as well? I really like scientific viz done in 3D and some of our testers have done some cool stuff with that lately. Check it.
Iceroid!

Ever see a macrophage eating a fungus spore deep in the lungs. Sure is prettier than I would have thought! :)

These aren't science images but they are still very pretty...

Back to work for me...
Have a great weekend. We'll be working. ;)

As someone who has worked every summer for the past 7 years as a glacier guide, I have to testify that the iceroid picture is dead on. Damn, I'm really impressed. I've wanted to do glacier stuff for a long time, especially in relation to graphic design for our guide service, Now I can make lettering that really looks like glacier ice. Is this going to be included as a preset by any chance? If not, no worries, I have a ton of pics I can generate textures from. But it would be nice if you could get all of these textures in the final release. Everything is looking good. Hopefully next week will be a tutorial on downloading our own copy. It seems like the time is ripe. Thanks in advance.

The NAB write up suggests release in the next few weeks! Oh man that first image especially knocked my socks off.
Brad... don't you mean "Iceteroid?" The word "iceroid" sounds like a liquid nitrogen enema.

Quote from Kvaalen : I really hate to say this, but am I the only one who is disappointed by this update?
Actually I was more disappointed the last two times (that's why I didn't comment), but the input remapping is cool. Granted, it's nothing new, but it's great to see how far it actually goes. Also the renders are getting more towards production-related stuff and not the abstract stylized experimental setups, which gives me more insight in how it might be usable in my projects. I think it's more than okay and I'm personally pleased to hear that some major issues have been resolved or at least nailed. With luck we should have new NVidia drivers by the time modo 201 comes out or even before.

No, I think some of the training videos could be tacked on. When you wait till friday, a quick video on mapping toggles is pretty anti-climatic (I realize that in the bigger picture this means I need a more exciting life). If it wouldn't take to long Brad, could you please post a few training videos, just to keep us amped until the release. Thanks

That last image with the glass-n-balls. Wow, that looks sooo good. I remember when Allen first showed it a while ago.
Anyway, a few questions:
1. Did Modo render the surface interaction automatically, or did you have to do a geometry trick to get the liquid to "fill" the glass?
2. In other renderers, transparent objects in contact with the "floor" tend to darken using the standard GI solution. Did you have to blur the Modo GI solution to get the bottom of the glass to not appear darker than the other objects in contact with the floor?
3. Isnt the reflection of the glass on the floor improper? Shouldnt the interior of the reflection of the glass on the floor be brighter than its edges, like the Orange Balls reflection is?
Man, I gotta tell ya, you guys are really, really smart. You've added a TON of features to this app and its still straight-forward and user-friendly. Keep up the great work.

P.S. - I think that macrophage just crawled across my desk and ate my snickers. Freakin SSS is too real I tell ya.

Anyone have advice on how to kill that little voice inside me that keeps saying each friday update will have a release date?
It's starting to hurt me :(
--- 401 made me switch from Linux to OSX so i could use it. Guess i should be glad it didn't ask for more. :)

cool. Still no replay to the 32 bit displacemnet/Normal map question though :(
And I certainly hope ALL testors will report 201 is more stable then 103 before its released.
Looks great though, can't wait to start rendering, painting, displacing characters in 201!

Very nice images Brad. :)
I just bought a super macro lens for photography, and can't wait to use it alongside 201! Good stuff.
