Progress report: The documentation is coming together nicely. Stephen gave us a new look and feel for the inline docs system and we now have inline images as well as multiple video clips per page. This is going to rock for learning 201 I must say. Combined with the tutorial material from some favorite modonauts the over all learning system is a wonderful thing.

Bugs are still falling off and the GL bug fix seems to have done the trick. I will be honest and tell you that we are not happy with the level of stability at this point. We really want to tighten things up much further prior to release. Fortunately code has stabilized and all focus is on killing bugs. The team is doing a wonderful job and using 201 becomes more and more enjoyable with each new build.

So what is the meaning of the title of this post? Well there is something amazing that happens when you create code that is really flexible. Artists abuse it! They make it do things that were never intended. Like what you say? Well, as you probably know 201 does not have a hair/fur system. So look at these images rendered in 201!

and this one...

and this one...

and this isn't fur but its kinda like feathers!

So if we don't do fur how the heck did the testers do these images? Well these are all great examples of the abuse of micro-polygon displacement rendering. Torturing our technology! So cool.

Here is another example of "hair" this one used MeshPaint to lay down thousands of instanced whiskers and then froze them all down to a single mesh after tweaking the base whisker for shape and combing effect. Also note the subtle use of subsurface scattering. Yummy!

Now for some movies. This week I bring you another video tutorial that comes with 201. This one is setting up quick environment, lighting, texturing and then rendering out to final image. So easy. So clean. So modo.

You wanted Torrents?! You GOT torrents Baby. Speaking of Torrents, now that we have it set up we also plan to release the VERY LARGE 201 download installers with a Torrent option.

Crap! I forgot to post this image too! More crazy displacements. This one with a lot of masking effects. Not to mention the killer subsurface scattering.

Wow.

Looking awesome, are there going to be many presets with 201 or a material library with loaded presets and samples with thumbnails of how they look?

Thanks Brad.

wow the torrent files are blazing fasssstttt. I'll keep it up when its done.

I still want to know if , we can bake a high resolution mesh unto a low res mesh as a normal map(all within Modo)..the other stuff Brad has shown was cool but not related to my question. a simple Yes or No would suffice...

Currently i would have to use XSI Ultimapper or Zmapper in Zbrush for this kind of thing.

Hahaha, downloading at 50kB/s! :D :D :D

Instead of an hour or two to download the clips, it'll take a matter of minutes. Great to get torrents! :)

Nice renderings, by the way. I particularly like the grassy modo logo.

I was gonna try fur with poly displacements, but I had no idea it'd look that good!

But how long did those renders take? So many polys...

downloading? sucka..im already done :P i'll keep the open to seed it for 30 minutes more. Thats the beautiful thing about torrents, the more people..the more seeds.

@Brad, please dont release a product you dont feel is stable enough(ignore the masses and do what is right!).

Torrent files use a BitTorrent client, it is a peer to peer technology. You download the .torrent file and open it up in a torrent program.

For Windows: uTorrent - http://www.utorrent.com
For OSX: Transmission - http://transmission.m0k.org/

It downloads the movie files at a fast speed, the idea behind it is as you download you upload the sections of the file you have downloaded to other users. The faster you upload usually the faster download speeds you can get.

It is worth checking out. However because most people are probably using torrents the direct download will probably be pretty quick.

Thanks. I really don't care how stable it is, I'd really like to be able to use it even though I'm not one of the special chosen ones.

It seems stable enough to produce some great renders and that's what I want, it's a shame only select people can use. You got some here that will say "just wait", but the reality is they want modo just as bad as I do.

Brad I've been wanting an easy to use rendering and texturing system just like this ever since I dabbled in 3DS Max and Maya. Now you got something that works, why not release something to the users who've essentially paid for the update and let us use it? I bet the majority of us would love to have our hands on it even if it crashes like the first release.

I appreciate everything you guys are doing but you're really torturing a lot of your users.

edit: btw if you can help me figure out this license problem I'm having on my wifes laptop, I'd appreciate it. I already made a thread in the product support forum. I'm at borders, I'd like to be able to model, but I can't. I believe I followed the correct installation steps but it's not working.

I second this. Extreme stability can be released as an update. I just want to play with this, and render all the models I made in 103.

I respect wanting it to be stable, but an artist is always the most critical of their own work.
To illustrate my point, when I was using the trial version of 102, it crashed constantly, but I still would restart it, and keep going. It didn't really bother me. I still decided that I had to own Modo. This is saying a lot too, because I've never bought any other 3D software, and rarely buy software at all, because I'm poor, and figure I can do a lot with a little.
It was just that Modo is that good. So if you want to release "The Unstable version" Modo 200.5, we'd all be really happy to blow off a few crashes.

I noticed in "MouseProject-01" that the viewport and side panels have nice little TABS. Now that is sweeeeeet.

Boy, every little bit I see makes me salivate more and more for 201. But, hey, I'm patient. I'm still relatively new to Modo so I have lots of catching up to do.

Three cheers for Modo...201-hooray! 201-hooray! 201-hooray!

EDIT: Now that's some of the sweetest SSS I've ever seen. Yea!

Companies that release unstable software are just asking for trouble.

I know this isn't what you want to hear but it shouldn't be released until it's ready.
