Call it. Heavy metal!
You know when you get a song stuck in your head? I woke up with that one today. I have some serious mulletude. Rock.
So we had several long talks with NVIDIA recently. We had a tester come in house for a week and then we borrowed another testers computer all in the interest of killing this annoying bug. On the one hand NVIDIA says they think it might be their bug. On the other hand, that is not a good solution for us because it takes a long time to get new drivers. Soooooo our engineering team took matters into their own hands and started looking for work arounds. We think we have one. Now don't get too crazy just yet but our initial tests show that our solution removes the crash related to VBOs. We will not be 100% confident about it until this beta gets into the hands of our external testers but we are enthusiastic.
In other news, the training materials are really coming along nicely. We have a tutorial series that is now over FOUR HOURS long and climbing. Also we are adding a significant amount of video to the inline help system. I'm really excited about this aspect of the app as I think we do it better than anyone else in the market and maybe in the world. No kidding.
While I guess one of our tutorial topics was somewhat controversial I still want to show you a sample of what you will get to build. If you are afraid of things that go "boom" you should just skip this link.
Hard Surface Tutorial
For those who skipped that link you might prefer this image that I created during testing. Perhaps I can do a tutorial on this!
Nice!
Of course our testers have been up to craziness as well. Here are a couple images I liked from one individual. He sent us the project file for the first one so you get that scene on the disc with 201. We'll try to extract some material presets from these bad boys!

Since I showed you some of the training material results I thought I would share more training videos here. The first one was too large at original res so this is scaled down and re-compressed. The version that comes with 201 is 2x the res and really clean. This series is awesome. My favorite part is that I didn't do it! ;) This is clip 28 out of 31 in the modeling series...
(NOTE: THIS IS NOT THE ACTUAL RESOLUTION THIS IS FAR TOO SMALL FOR A TUTORIAL. THIS IS JUST A TEASER SCALE.) Don't tread on me
And here is one I did this week showing a new technique for creating image brushes.
Give em the brush off
Have a great weekend. I've got to get back to working on the training materials. I have deadlines you know! ;)

WOOT !
*Edit*
Hey Brad, I hope these NVidia solutions will work well with SLI setups as well. I'm loving my dual cards now, and it would be a shame to lose the power...
Rock On !

Thanks Brad... now I've got that song in my head. :-\
Great test tube shot and I'm really looking forward to the tank tutorial!

Well I thought I could sneak in before the server got nailed this week, sucker. Thought I'd post this while it was loading. Stunning glass and metal.
Good to hear you seem to have a workaround. Seemed like it was their bug so I'm glad your people were able solve the issue.
Not sure why some one went off about guns. I think it was more soap boxing than anything. The only things I think that should be avoided are things is blantant bad taste and things intended to offend. Otherwise bring it on and the wilder the better. Can't wait for the tutorials, not to mention 201.

Great stuff Brad, I'm glad there will be some scenes and presets provided with 201. Will be very helpful. And the tutorials look great!!
Belseth, I started download within 1 minute of the post and its now been clobbered and I'm only half done. Would have posted a mirror right away to help serve this, which I'll have up when its down downloading now...
Feel free to stop your download so they can be mirrored!!! :)

Thanks for keeping us updated Brad, that's a big help here. Seems like it will be a bit before 201 yet, but that's ok, it will allow more time for awesome documentation and other bug fixing. :) That hard-surface tutorial should be awesome - I can see a lot to be learned in that image.
Also, the glass rendering is really nice - good exit colors and refraction.

Seriously. BitTorrent is your friend.
These tutorials sound like the best thing to happen to the industry--more people will be able to produce better work with this kind of help, if the 103 tutorials are anything to go by. And, actually, you picked the perfect object--a complex mechanical one! Everyone else is like "here's how to make a cheesy fan" or nothing at all, really. I just can't thank you guys enough for this!

Brad could you put the Flowers in the barrels of the gun for us? Now there is a good middle ground. :P

Always cool, Brad. Now hurry up and release! I've got a severed head VFX shot that would really benefit from 201. Can't post recent progress... but it's very cool and very much a pain to match geometry and bake out the texture projection in Maya.

about how many gb will the 201 download be (including all videos) for those who won't get a cd/dvd? and how will this work if the server gets stormed by all users at the same time? will bittorrent be used for the video part of the official release? what if i can't use bittorrent? :)

There will be a separate download installer for the video files as there is now (maybe two). We are bringing more servers online for the e-delivery of 201 and we are looking at torrents for the content installers. If you can't use torrent you will have to use traditional download technology and/or spring for the DVD. :)
