Wow. You guys are getting antsy! ;) We've been wicked busy this week and really crazy this morning as we are pushing out yet another beta. So far we maintain our pace of one a week with excellent progress in each. We are now a hair away from UI freeze (mostly I am iterating through some additional UI configurations and various streamlining of configs based on beta testers feedback. The developers continue to focus on hammering down bugs and they are going an amazing job.
So who wants to see some pictures? I decided to go with a theme this week of true micropolygon displacement rendering. These are some really choice examples of the technology in action. Some of these were done early in the testing cycle but I wanted you to get to see them.
The gratuitous planetary landscape render from one polygon and textures...

One of our lead engineers did this image while testing some texture layering. Nice.

Creative use of textures and images with displacement rendering...

This is such a subtle and smooth use of displacements.

Alright Peebler, make with the talkies already!
fine fine...
We wanted to take some time and talk about some modeling improvements today.
You want to streamline? Go for it... Modeling = Workflow
2D corners too sharp? Not a problem.
Vert Rounding
Do you think bevel hauling is backwards? So do I! No? Nevermind....
Haul it your way
Had to sneak in a render vid too of course. Ever make Whiskey with Beer? You can if it's Beers law af absorbance...
I should note that I was going to talk during the video but it turns out there wasn't enough time. So you get a silent film for this one. Pity when the render time doesn't allow for narration. Watch the clip and then I'll tell you about it below.
Have a shot
So that was lit entirely by a luminous polygon and uses the Material atrribute known as Absorption Distance which allows the transparent surface to become more opaque the further the ray travels through it. Looks nice doesn't it? Anyway this was rendered on the quad G5. Mmmmmm. Whiskey. That reminds me. I gotta go, ummmm, back to work. Yeah thats it...
OK. I gotta get back to work. Seriously!

no normal map baking video?
The third image looks great!
haul it your way, its about time. i never liked the current hauling in Modo either.
workflow video, this is what i love about 201.
Still cant rotate back into a perspective view from a ortho! argh..)

My thoughts about the videos, in no particular order:
That glass rendering was pretty impressive indeed, considering the 512 indirect rays used... Would you mind posting the finished image, Brad? How was the liquid made? More info, more more more! :D
Input remapping = BRILLIANT!!!
Vertex bevel with "roundness" = Awesome - this is something I've wanted for modo a while now.
Images look great. I like that micropoly displacement.
Also, I'm glad I was fast with downloading the videos this time. The "BeerForWhiskey" downloaded at 60kB/s. At the end, the "BevelHauling" video was dragging along at maybe 5kB/s... :P

Awesome!!! Thanks.
Not to sound unappreciative, but would it be possible to get the image posted of that "whiskey shot"? It would be interesting to see it in all it's glory after having seen the render take place.
Thanks again for the updates, and I hope you don't mind our "antsy" behaviour. :)

Is it just me or during the workflow video is their an issue/bug with the maximize the command history tab? I noticed something when you hit the keypad zero to maximize then again to restore, then again to being maximized again. After you maximize it, you are in the "scripts" section of the command history then when you restore the command history to it's original size/location, it restores the viewport back to the "undos" section. Then when you maximize it again it goes back to "scripts" section. Is this the intended behavior?
Great vids though.. I like the filleted corners!
Thanks! Azeiku
Edit: Wording to make it a little more clear.

Captain and Harlan, I was inspired by an image that one of our testers sent me to create the shot glass scene to experiment with refraction and Beer's Law. It's still a work in progress, but Brad convinced me that we should release the video anyway. I can post a nice still once it's done to my satisfaction.
The modeling is very simple, just one lathe for the glass and one for the whiskey. I put them in separate layers so I could easily render just the glass or just the whiskey, and no "air" polygons were required.

So no more setting up "surface thickness"-based gradients to control depth falloff manually? Awesome! ;) And yes, a nice still once it's done would be nice. :)

No problem Allen, take your time of course. Would be nice to see what you end up with though. The image in the video looked fantastic.

Nice! I love the macro example. Modo's macro recorder is awesome. Good work! I love the speed of that render with those settings.
