It's the little things that make modo modo. Refinement is the key. Even our round wheels are getting rounder. This week I wanted to take some time to review some additions we have made to existing tools to make things better. Several of our testers have said to me that it is these little things that makes 201 completely addictive. Of course, painting and rendering doesn't hurt either.
Some good news this week. We have officially integrated an intel Mac for our autobuild system. What this means is that everyday a Universal Binary of 201 is generated automatically. For the user this means that 201 will release as a Universal Binary. While this seems simple there was some work on our end. Our code, being modern, was a simple transition to the intel Mac. However, we do link to several 3rd party libraries. Things like OpenEXR, FlexLM, FreeImage and FBX. Since FreeImage and OpenEXR are open source we were able to port these to the intel Mac on our own. Flex and FBX were a bigger problem. For 201 initial release the intel Mac simply won't be able to have FBX (unless Alias gets with the program and moves it over soon). We have worked around the Flex issue on our own. Our new licensing scheme will seem no different to the user so it is still very user friendly.
We were aloso pleasantly surprised last week to see that Apple used modo 201 rendering as their premier benchmark for the intel Mac. I confirmed their results in their labs and we have double checked these results with our production iMac we got in house this week.
Of course our Windows version is hot as well. ;) It's good to be a completely modern code base. Recently I went to AMD and ran a 64 bit native version of modo 201 on a Ferrari laptop with a 64 bit AMDchip and 64 bit Windows. I didn't perform scientific benchmarks but it sure screamed for a laptop. What's that you say? 64 bit native modo? Yep. No official word on release of the version but we are working on it.
Our testers have been busy too. Check out the latest from a couple testers.
This is a model that was done in 103 and ZBrush. When the artist got 201 they moved the mesh into modo for final rendering. I likes.

And the obligatory GI rendered interior. So nice.

Videos anyone? (I wanted to get you about 10 videos today showing some refinements but my family pulled up sick so I had to cut short the recording to play nurse. We'll pick up the rest next week.) Enjoy!
Can you feel the tension?

Brad, looking at the multi-falloff video the OGL interaction looks great, but can we sculpt with 1.5 million polygons interactively with the new advance OGL?

Call me a freak, but I get chills every time the Q pops up in a new window. Must admit tho, still hungry for more. Very excited about the 64 bit version. Is there a significant speed increase compared to 32 bit? Hope your family gets well soon, Brad. My best wishes.

I like this weeks update. Refinements are awesome and really well thought out. As for the MiniTicks, will we be able to shift select multiple inputs TranslateX TranslateY TranslateZ and perform these shift clicks and incremental clicks along with multiple numeric entries at once? I am glad that you guys made such great progress this week and I stil can't wait to get my hands on 201!!! Nice to see the finishing touches are falling into place, I speak for everyone when I say we are ready for 201.
Thanks Greg

Will the mouse-wheel zoom be mappable to the touch-strips on Intuos tablets as well ?

When they improve the OGL even more so we can sculpt interactively on a 1.5 million polygon mesh :P. Patients...

that sounds like a good idea.
Two additional things for minsliders
- how about right-click resets to zero
- control click will jump to nearest integer for the currently displayed unit.
keep up the good work,

What a refreshing change.
I'm very new to Modo(Licence has just arrived 48 hours ago) but i can't believe how different the relationship is between Lux and it's users.
As somebody who is still waiting for his final version of Maxwell render to arrive, some 12 months after purchase and with little if no explanation from Next Limit, I was somewhat nervous about spending more money based on the functionality advertised by the developing company.
However, not only am I loving using the current version of Modo but the regular 201 information updates in this forum and the general community spirit here is nothing short of wonderful.
I'm really excited about the development of 201 (release soon I hope), great work Lux!

Very cool update!
The multi-falloffs are particularly impressive. I am guessing that in 201, the now dormant mix modes in the fall-off tool properties will finally have an effect.
Oh, is there a limit to the number of fall-offs that can be combined in the toolpipe? .)
