Boy these weeks go by fast around the Holidays!
Despite the black hole that normally surrounds the holidays the team has been hard at work and made some really great progress again this week. I think we had over 100 updates (measured by check-ins to the code base) over the last 7 days. Not bad for a Holiday week. Actually really good for the Holidays. Also, Dion did some fun tests with scripting and actually created a simple camera animation with the modo renderer using Perl to control the camera. The scripting should allow some clever folks to do some very creative things with modo as a renderer in the not so distant future. :)
So this week I wanted to take some time to show you the Image Synthesis PS filter that will be included with 201. The filter is code complete and we are now working to complete the documentation. While we aren't going to get it out before the end of the year (TOMORROW!), it will be out in January if all goes to plan. Those who are entitled to a free 201 upgrade will gain access to the filter immediately. 201 pre-orders have the option to grab the filter at release as well.
Let's get to it!
Here is the Image Synthesisfilter in action:
Image Synth
And here are some shading tests using micro-bumps to simulate frosted glass from one of the testers. I like these.

And a beautiful use of micropoly displacement for sand and tracks. So cool.

Have a happy and safe New Years everyone!

Hope you enjoy your time off. Outstanding job you guys are doing and we'll be ready and waiting for a killer Modo 2006! I for one seriously appreciate all the work you've done all the while keeping modo at an extremely reasonable price level. Luxology is top shelf for sure.

what photoshop versions will be supported? from the video i didn't quite get the advantage of having it as a photoshop plugin instead of a standalone application.

This has probably been asked before:
Does the Image Synthesis filter work with PS7 or do you need the CS version?
Modo makes modeling fun.

Whoohoo - Image Synthesis looks outstanding! This is gonna be so cool.
I'd like to thank the Lux team for all their hard work and dedication to modo and wish you all a happy new year for 2006.
Camera animation scripting does sound sweet and is another example of how the developers are listening to users requests. Thanks again.

Wow, that filter will be awesome. Thanks for the hard work and the generous updates. Can't wait...
I do hope that the imagesynth filter will be stand along in the future as it didnt' seem to "need" photoshop for anything and I'd much prefer to use it directly from modo without needing the pricey photoshop. (Especially now with painting in modo!!)
Thanks again and happy new year everyone!!

Agreed. I personally would prefer a stand alone version.
What about those who don't have Photoshop?

Any chance that this might get implemented into The Gimp as well as opposed to JUST photoshop? I mean, I don't personally care since I've got it, but it'd be a nice free solution for people who don't have/can't afford Photoshop.

Well, that depends to which version of the Photoshop API it is compiled to. I sincerely hope they settle for the smallest common denominator (Photoshop 6/7) which would allow the filter to run inside many other apps such as Paint Shop Pro, Painter, Corel Photopaint and even freeware programs such as Gimp and XnView. If not I guess many of us are screwed and will end up with a useless filter :-\ which in turn would mean I'd have to ask them for a refund.

Eclipse
Gimp can use Photoshop filters if they are created using the proper Photoshop API. (See my other post)

Can't ask for a refund for something that is included for free with another product. Only if you bought it directly from imagesynth might you be able to ask for a refund.
I'm sure there is some reason why its a photoshop filter and not standalone, hopefully lux is away of this and will do something about it or explain it in the future. Either way, I am thrilled to see the capabilities, very smart stuff...

I hope Dion's camera motion script will be made public. That would be cool.

Great! would you tell us the specification of PS which ImageSynthesis needs ? I wish that ImageSynthesis can operate an HDRI on PS-CS2. I'll prepare it.
Happy new year for Lux and all users.
