Happy Friday fellow modonaughts!

It has been a good week. I would say not as good as last week, but the project marches ever forward. We did have a couple silly bugs that got introduced at the beginning of the week but they were quickly identified and killed. On the other hand, we also had some really killer optimizations done for projects using instances. Since I promised to do some paint tricks for today, I'll have to do some instancing on one of the next fridays. THere is so much to show you!

I would also like to tell you that one of the things that was a much bigger project than we anticipated was the complete input remapping system. It has been a real bear to get right, but I think it is really coming together now. I plan to do some videos for you on that soon as well. The results are really very cool. I think it will make you all quite pleased.

We also added something this week that was not on the original spec. Our scripting system now supports Python! Based on user feedback (and some heavy hittter studios!) we decided to extend the supported languages from Perl and LUA to include Python. In the process we discovered Python is actually pretty sweet!

This weeks 201 treats include a couple of images rendered in modo from the Sponza project. These are tests in performance and do not have the quality settings maxed out but for roughly 2 to 3 minutes a frame they are pretty sweet.

We also bring to you two new video clips (I spoil you). As promised I show a little more on the painting front as well as some tricks using Ambient Occlusion baking and the paint tools for creating a grime map. Good times.

(Disclaimer: There are a couple user errors in the first video. I forgot to activate Projection Paint so you may notice the paint stroke moves away from the brush where the UV map distorts. Thats not a bug, just my bad. Also, I had the wrong tool active when I went to use the blur and painted some black pixels instead. It was about midnight last night and I was too tired to re-record them to correct it. So there you have it.)

Enjoy!

This one rendered in 3 minutes 31 seconds on the quad G5.

This one rendered in 1 minute and 33 seconds on the quad! Thats a fast combo...

If you mock my painting skills you get no more soup! ;)

modo can paint but Brad can't!

I have to run to a meeting and the Ambient Occlusion-Grime Map video is not on the server yet. I will have Jason post a link in this thread as soon as it is up.

Jason Edit - Here it is: Ambient Occlusion - Grime Map Video

Enjoy!

Great! The quality is good for the time invested. It is fast.

Tonight i will render it in Lightwave to compare.

Mmmm, i have looked at the file names for those pics and i have discovered that the first pic says "modo201_sponza_01_5m19s.jpg" and the second "modo201_sponza_02_2m44s.jpg".

So you said the first one was 3 minutes 31 seconds and the file says 5 minutes and 19 seconds. The second you said 1 minute and 33 seconds and the file says 2 minutes and 44 seconds. They were rendered in a different computer and not in the Quad G5?

Awesome!

Quick question for Brad....I noticed that one video was done on a Mac and the other on a PC. Are there some features, such as the advanced open GL, which are better on the PC or unsupported on a mac? I'm considering a new computer...what is the recommended video card for 201? Thanks!

wow, great stuff. I'm going to order the 201 update asap.

Does 201 also have projection painting like Bodypaint ? I love that because it enables you to paint in realtime even with complicated brushes and no distortion when the UV's are not so clean.

Is there any way for you guys to tell us what kind of time frame you are looking at? Like are you thinking 6 months, a year, 3 months as to when you might get 201 out the door? I know you don't want to give exact times and I don't want you to but I have a project coming up that I would like to use modo for and if I had a time frame I would be able to figure out if I could use 201 or not? This way if I could use it I would be able to start modeling using 103.

So in a rough estimate are we looking at 3, 6, 8, 10 months?

Thanks

Brad,

Great job! You really aren't as bad a painter as you make yourself out to be. Don't be nervous - Modo make it easy!

Anyway - will we be be able to paint on multiple layers at the same time in Modo i.e. bump/spec/color?

And will Modo have masks/selection areas like in PhotoShop. That would be soooo cool.
