I'm a big fan of Ashley Wood, especially the industrial design of his robots. There's also no way I can afford the kick-ass Bertie The Pipebomb toy, so building a model of it should be therapeutic right?

I'm a few hours into this already. The body is mostly done (lacking a couple details including the engine on the back), legs are done, upper arm is done, and I'm working on the lower arm now.

cool stuff brandroid! never heard of this character, poked around the internets and like what I've seen. Looking forward to seeing with texturing and maybe a human or something for scale. Ashley's site has him twice as tall as a jeep http://www.ashleywoodartist.com/popup.php?id=48. Reminds me a bit of Scud the Disposable Assasin. Keep it up, I'll be watching this one.

Thanks Monkeez! Wood paints in a very expressive style, so I'm using photos of the toy as my reference to nail the accuracy. But yeah, Bertie is fairly tall compared to a human.

I haven't decided yet if I'll create a scene for him or just shoot him in a studio environment. I've got a lot of work to to do as I plan on modeling his armament as well as his pouches, and all those goodies have to be textured as well!

Got the arms done. Spent a lot of time reworking the loop slices in the arms and legs for consistency. It's on to the hands now.

The main piece of the hand is done. Moving on the to the digits now. This one was a beast. I used a spline cage to match the unusual curves of the source material, and had to do it twice to get it right. Couldn't find a way around high-valence poles in a couple places, but they should be concealed once he's brandishing his weapons.

Looks great! Can't wait to see the weapons being built! Keep up the good work...

Just a thought, it might look nice to put him on a painterly looking background similar to the Ashley Wood artwork in your final renders.

Marinello - Thanks for peaking!

JKM - That's not a bad idea. I might end up shooting it in a couple of different environments.

Fingers are modeled and rigged and have been added to the hands. Cutting the holes for the fingers was a bit of a nightmare, but I'm happy with the results. I'm looking forward to the new animation tools in 401, as the item list in this model continues to grow.

Coming along nicely brandroid! Looking forward to the finished piece. By "rigging" the fingers do you mean assigning pivot points and parenting appropriately? They look quite articulate!

Thanks Grapho! Yeah Monkeez, I'm using the term rigging in the loosest sense. I just parented all of the finger segments accordingly and moved the pivots to the proper locations. I'm hoping 401 is released soon, because this would be a great chance to try out the new IK for the legs and arms.

Thanks Thierry!

Added a few more details to the body, including the nub on the chest and the hooks for his pouches. Resized the shoulders and hands (both were a little small). I also improved the holes in the head as these were never completely round. I think I'm finally ready to move on to the backpack.

You are going to love 401... since you could really rig this to completeness. Very cool model and solid topology work.

Rattyu, Ashley Wood's designs always manage to strike that fine balance between simple and kick-ass; this has been a blast to model.

Rich, Thanks for the complement. I've obviously been getting more excited about 401 as I've been modeling this and watching the reveals get more and more intense. I can't wait to get this guy into 401. BTW - that's some sweet work on that tank rig – very inspiring!

Thanks guys. If you're partial to the design, chances are you'd like Wood's other robots as well. Granted all these toys are beyond my current means, but they're still cool to drool over. The Brambles and Large Martins might make fun modeling projects too.

As for the gender, you'd have to ask Ashley Wood to be sure, but the design is incredibly phallic, so I'm guessing it's a male. ;)

I started on the device on his back. Once this is done I should be able to move on to the weapons and pouches.
