I'm not sure if this is a tutorial or a WIP. I suppose it's somewhere in between.

This is something I've been wanting to model for a while so I thought while I'm doing it why don't I just press record at the same time. I havn't edited the videos so all my mistakes are in there, and there's no audio, but it might be an interesting watch. I've included the reference images in case anyone wants to have a go.

So this is it, my son's radio controlled car.

This first set of videos shows me modelling the wheels. I'm afraid I had to encode them as avi with Divx. I'm having problems with Quicktime at the moment.

Enjoy

Andy

Excellent! I just wrapped up a bunch of work and was getting ready to gear up (no pun intended) and get some serious modo time in. I'm actually going to finish the camera first but I'm about half way through it so this will be a great follow up.
Thanks for sharing your time and knowledge.
For what it's worth, I think you should just hit the old record button every time you fire modo up.

Thanks once again Andy. I'll try to get these files converted. By the way and not to get too off topic here, but I was browsing through the old community project section and was again looking over the toy truck project. I was interested how you tackled the wheel indentations. I know Paq Wak used a boolean op to slice the mesh but I can't quite puzzle out how the mesh was then lowered and flattened to form the indentation. I know I'm missing something really simple here.

Thanks everyone, hope you get something from it. I should get the next lot posted tomorrow some time. I'm in edge slice hell at the moment doing the chassis.

GRom: I seem to remember just using a bevel and a bit of edge weighting. I did a video of it but I think I might of deleted it. I'll have a look.

Andy thanks. No need to dig up the vid. A small, low-wattage light bulb blinked on 1/3 of a revolution around the globe from you.

Here's an update. Finished the chassis. The rest of it just sits ontop of it. Will post the videos as soon as they are encoded and uploaded.

I have a problem with file Radio_Car_2.zip. It always stop downloading at 63,3 MB but at the beginnig of the downloading it says it is going to be 84 Mb.

If i try to unpack my 63,3 Mb file, it gives me an error.

That's wierd. It is 84mb. I'll look into it. Have you had problems with any other ones?

No, the others ones download correctly.

It is strange. I told a friend who uses Windows to download that file. He downloaded 84Mb. I tried it and only 63,1 Mb. I tried Firefox, Safari and SiteSucker. (I am using Mac OS X)

I have a Mac running 10.4.2 and safari 2.0.1 and had no trouble downloading any of the files. No problems getting past the 63 mb mark all the way to 84.

excellent video's Andy, thanks for not using any obscure pop-ups/pie menus etc..makes it very clear and easy to follow, even without any audio. Just one question, what level of subD do you use when modelling?

Right here's the next batch of videos. THese take the model up to the point shown in the last image. Took suprisingly long to do actually, some tricky details on the front, anyway enjoy. BTW I've updated the reference image file.

noiseboy: I just use the default, I think it's three. If the OpenGL starts to slow down I might reduce it.

hey Andrew - good job again - having trouble however with the last video (number 14)- it says (I tried windows and a 3rd party app) that the file is invalid or corrupt. I don't normally have issues like this so I thought that I would mention it . . .

Hi Steve, I just downloaded it and didn't have any problems. It must have corrupted somehow on the download. Try it again, and let me know.

Cheers

Another update. Completed the engine. Some nice little bits to model here, particularly the dome ontop of the fin. Videos to follow!
