I can see what you meen Pixelphil.. I do believe that factory never was intended for 1000+ brick sales - but I will make sure your comment is passed on to the factory team.

This is amazing stuff. 100 kudos points for the dedication and love.
PS: I am slightly puzzled by your wall. Does your entire home look like this?

Keith may have a better answer, but for me this is how it worked:
1. Build a matrix of standard-size 1x1 bricks (each brick an individual mesh item 9.6mm x 8mm x 8mm) large enough to completely encase the target shape. 2. With target shape in background layer, perform the Solid Drill Stencil function. 3. In Polygon selection mode, Double-click and delete all unmarked bricks all around. 4. Double-click all the outermost bricks that remain (all with stencil marks in them) and delete these. 5. The remaining bricks are the outer surface and internal bricks of the final model.
Actually, you can do a shortcut between steps 1 and 2 buy placing the model in each of the 2D views (top, side, front) with the bricks layer in Wireframe view - and lasso around all bricks that stick out beyond the 2D edges of the background target shape - double click and delete these polys to form a gross brick model that is roughly close to the target shape.
You can see a few details on this in my Lego thread (inspired by this one)...

If you specify a different material when doing the solid drill>stencil you can then select the stencilled polys from info & stats > polygons > by material Then do a "select connected" to get the rest of the affected cubes. Cut and paste them to a new layer.
The only downside of this way is that there will be lots of wasted cubes filling up the entire volume of the model - not very efficient.
An alternative method is select polys>4verts after the solid drill, then use select connected. Again, cut and paste to new layer. Depending on the density of the cutting mesh, this method should get most of the cubes you wanted with no wasted cubes in the middle. You might have to manually fix a couple of holes if you've been unlucky (i.e. some cubes still having only 4 vert polys after stencil).
Cheers, Keith

Hey Keith,
I think i speak for a lot of people when i say; "What do I have to do to get that Lego Mario 3D Model"
Some people may even be willing to pay for it.
I would love to hear from you. Even if its a big fat NO.

As long as this thread has been bumped, has anyone noticed that it's received nearly a quarter million hits? Wow, Mario rules, I guess...

Very nice project, Keith! "Lego Mario" turned out really brilliantly. I love the way you've displayed him in front of those wall stickers! Looks like it was great fun.

Would it be possible to get the original Modo file? We are trying to recreate your work in Minecraft, but it's difficult just looking at the pictures. Not to mention that we don't know what the back looks like. Thanks.

I've been commissioned by GAME MANIA to build a supersized LEGO Super Mario (150cm) - basically twice the size of Keith's adored sculpture ;

Follow the daily progress on http://www.brick-projects.com ( there's a twitter option ) ( if you happen to speak dutch I recommend http://www.gamemania.nl/mario , it's more indepth and hi-res photos )
would appreciate it if some of you could post this elsewhere on the web, don't have much time to spend on internet, tight deadline to get it finished for legoworld.nl expo, thanks.

This is really awesome. Very nice work.
I'm planning on making one of these as a gift for an old friend that used to work at Nintendo. I just ordered what I estimate should be more than enough pieces, but I can't see everything from what was posted.
Is there any way you could provide me with a couple more shots from the sides and back? Or, if it isn't asking too much, is there any free software I could use to read one of the 3d files, or could you export some more images of the block layout?
Cheers
