I recently built this Lego model of Mario using a NextEngine 3D scanner, modo and big pile of Lego. Hope you like it!
Cheers,
Keith

I scanned a Mario action figure using the excellent NextEngine scanner...

The resultant mesh in the scanning application...

Imported into modo as OBJ and scaled to the size of the model I wanted to build (75cm). I used the bend tool to bend his arms closer to his body so the Lego model would be structurally stronger...

In a new layer I created a large array of Lego sized cubes which were approximatley the shape of the Mario mesh...

Using Solid Drill>Stencil, I was able to select only the cubes which intersected the Mario mesh...

The building begins...

Completed Lego model in all its 75cm glory...

Close-up...

That is soooo cool. Did you light it with an hdr of the room? Looks great!

-Greg

he may be missing the slightest bit of reflection in the wood floor, the scanner is reflecting pretty clearly.

Thanks Greg but you do know this is NOT a render? I actually built this out of Lego and it's sitting on my desk right now. Perhaps it was mistake to post this in the gallery but hey, it is still artwork created using modo!

Cheers,
Keith

p.s. I had to laugh when I read the reflection is off - I must have a magic desk!

ahhh man! I thought that was a render (that's why I asked about the HDR, the lighting and reflections were spot on!). Guess I was wrong about the table too!

That's awesome Keith! Lux should write an article on this and get it posted up on the main site - an interesting process to watch, so many thanks for sharing it.

Thanks. Fyi, it's not wallpaper, they're wall decals from Blik. They stick on and can peel off easily.
Blik decals

The model is about five or six lego blocks thick in most places so it's fairly solid. The feet are entirely solid . There's also a 2 brick wide wall running up the centre of the model to give it more strength.

Keith

So you used the model as reference for the lego version? That's really cool, nice work.

While this is really cool, I don't quite follow the why as to the process...

Why not just look at the action-figure as reference, and just build it with the Legos?

Why all the scanning and 3D work?

Cool either way. :)
