The san diego modo user group is pleased to launch the "Rutan Aerospace Celebration (RAC)" global community 3D modeling project! http://www.sdmodo.org/sdmodoProjects.html
This project is in celebration of the beginning of flight-testing for WhiteKnightTwo and SpaceShipTwo (WK2/SS2) - expected to begin later this year (2008).
This morning (January 23, 2008) Richard Branson and Virgin Galactic along with Burt Rutan, SCALED Composites and The Spaceship Company - revealed to the public for the first time the true design of the WK2/SS2 ships (AKA: VSS Enterprise / VMS Eve, N348MS / N339SS - or Triceratops). Virgin Galactic also declared 2008 "The Year of the Spaceship"! http://www.virgingalactic.com/pressftp/ http://www.eaa.org/video/eaa.html?videoId=1389983156
For this project we will be modeling some of the 50+ aerospace projects developed by Burt Rutan, Rutan Aircraft Factory and SCALED Composites over the past 40 years. We hope many of you will join us and model one of these to help us create another great body of work to share with our global modo community. It will be great fun and a great community and skill building experience!
If you are interested in participating, please select one of the projects listed on the image below and send me an email. I will respond with additional details and I will try to assist you with collecting reference images. All participants will be asked to publish their Work In Progress (WIP) here in this forum, complete their project by the end of this year, and donate their completed model to the modo community.
The san diego modo user group is all about sharing and learning modo. We hope many of you will join us to help make this a big success!
Thanks,
-Jeff (jeffrutan at mac dot com)

Jeff, what sort of reference will be made available, blueprints for example?
We've got Armadillos in our trousers. It's really quite frightening.

Some of these craft have sufficient reference material available on the web, but others have very little. Some Rutan aerospace projects have no information at all that I could find on the Internet - so they are not listed/pictured in the image above. I will try to assist each of you as you make a project selection. My dad is usually very busy, but when I see him I will try to get better 3-view drawings and other photos for committed projects that need them.
The guidelines for this project are much more open than they were for the museum project last years... I will try to encourage everyone to select a different craft to model, and I would like to see them modeled as realistically as you can - but that is not really so important this time since we are not trying to populate a specific museum that many will visit in real life. There can be more than one of any given craft at the Mojave Airport - even versions that don't exist in real life. You can do a more artistic interpretation of your craft if you wish - like an exaggerated cartoon version, a unique paint job, or an impressionistic organic sculpture like Andusan might create. ;-)
The whole idea of these group projects is to increase the community involvement, promote more sharing and learning in modo, and have lots of fun! We want this project to artistically celebrate a prolific chain of creative engineering that has lead from revolutionary exotic homebuilt aircraft to the first privately funded manned launch into space - and beyond!
This year and following years some of us will have the opportunity to visit Mojave to watch flight tests and rocket launches as WK2 and SS2 prepare for the world's first fully commercial space tourism venture. Our 3D models celebrating the linage of these ships are a way to participate more intimately in this historic development.
June 17, 2008 is my dad's 65th birthday, so I hope to have many of these projects collected into some kind of presentation to show at his birthday party. But the fun in the modeling process and the final assets will be online for the whole global modo community to share. And I hope that the collection will continue to grow for other future presentations!
As creative expressions, some of you may wish to model something that is inspired by Rutan aerospace craft - like an actual or imaginary derived craft or a speculative future spacecraft - like SpaceShipThree or SpaceShipFour.
Others may wish to paint WK2/SS2 with the logos of another space line other than Virgin Galactic - since The Spaceship Company plans to sell WK2/SS2 fleets to multiple other operators after Virgin Galactic gets started. I will gladly offer my models to anyone who would like to just paint them.
Please send me an email with your aerospace craft selection and/or a description of your artistic direction, and I will mark you down as committed to participate!
Thanks, -Jeff (jeffrutan at mac dot com)

Yes! I am very much looking forward to ShMon's GM Ultralite! Actually, I am surprised he has not posted a nearly complete model yet! ;-)
Orrey - Better start that DC-X quick - I want to see a start by meeting time Monday! ;-)
ShMon - I sent you an email with details about this project. Please respond if you got it, or email me if you did not get it. Maybe your email address has changed since last July?

Can we do a Rutan inspired aircraft of our own design?
If not I'm tempted to do the Amsoil racer, Variviggen or Catbird. Well to be honest they are all so friggen cool.

djolar - Yes! See my second post in this thread above. This time around we are encouraging more creativity! Although I would like to see most of the listed craft modeled realistically, you are very welcome to add your own style or even do a totally original design inspired by a Burt Rutan design. There are also many Rutan-inspired craft in real life that would be fine contributions to this project. Also there are literally hundreds of Rutan designed craft that were never built.
Just send me an email describing what you intend to build and I will add your project commitment to the list.

I may have missed this, but are there specific plans then on what to do with the models? I've seen a lot of projects like this get people involved with promise to make the models all available to help out the community for some time, but I don't think that has happened yet with the first museum aircraft models, or the grocery store content for that matter either?
I think the whole lux community would be a lot more valuable if people were willing to make some of these models available to the public from luxology.com. That would certainly help to promote modo...

Mike,
The greatest value of these community projects is really in the experience of participating with your fellow modonauts! However, all of the assets from the SDAM 2007 project are available on the sdmodo FTP site to all who participated and upon request to any global modo community member. Arrangements have not yet been made with Luxology for Luxology to host these assets. The assets for this RAC project will also be donated to the global modo community. I will make a greater effort to get all of the assets collected on the sdmodo FTP site hosted by Luxology when we finish this project.
The only trouble is that we are all volunteers with limited free time to keep pushing these things. There was a huge amount of interest expressed by the participants in the SDAM project (60 artists), but not so much from outside that group. Otherwise I would have devoted more time to pushing the Luxology asset hosting. It is also volunteering of labor and resources on the part of Luxology to provide such hosting services - even if it might benefit them in some way.
For now, if anyone in the global modo community wants access to any/all of the sdmodo assets, they can send me an email request and I will provide the FTP site access information. Our website / FTP hosting service is not fast enough to accommodate full free open access.

Welcome to modo and the Luxology forum! Nice start on the Ares and the EZ looks nearly done - depending on the level of detail you want - ready to paint - have fun learning the modo shader tree! You really should start a new/different thread here in the WIP forum for each of your projects. Then it will be easier for folks to find your stuff and help with any questions you have. You can reproduce the posts you have here in new threads, then remove the pictures from your posts in this thread and replace them with links to your new dedicated project threads. Thanks, -Jeff

Please upload any work you have for this - even if unfinished - especially final render and wire shots to the community project FTP site very soon so I can include your work in the event presentation (to be shown June 21, 2008). Thanks, -Jeff

This community project is really open ended, so you can participate at any time and contribute to the community collection if you wish to share with your fellow modonauts.
The initial deadline was June 1, 2008 in order to get your creations into a special presentation that will be held on June 21, 2008 at the Mojave, CA Airport. However, I am still working on that presentation, and can add any projects (completed or not) if they are submitted by June 20, 2008 (still images and/or short animated clips).
There are a number of public events for WhiteKnightTwo (WK2) and SpaceShipTwo (SS2) later this year and next year (the "Year of the Spaceship" is slipping into next year now). The next event is the public rollout of WK2 on July 28, 2008. There will be opportunities to show a presentation of the work done in this community project at some of those events. I will add new content to the presentation before each of these events.
So the project is "open ended" and we (the san diego modo user group) would love to see more submissions added all the time! 8-)

The June 21, 2008 Rutan Brothers Birthday Bash was quite a success with over 500 attendees and what looked like about 100 homebuilt Rutan Long EZs and VariEzes and various Rutan-inspired and other homebuilts that flew in for the event!
I presented a slideshow including WIP images, renders and a couple of animated shorts from the following RAC project participants:
Raymond Deleu "RayBlender" Tom Vincze "3D Artist" Bob Lackey "Orrey" Will Trumble Zafar Haq and myself.
Thanks to all of you for your participation!
See the participant list with WIP links in one of my posts above.
The "Year of the Spaceship" is far from over (in fact it will extend far into next year), and there will be a number of occasions to share this collection of work with an interested audience. So I hope to see more of you pick a project and join in the fun any time!

This project is still going on and is open ended, so it would be great to have more modo artists join and participate!
Even if you don't want to contribute but would like to use some of the models others are creating, you can send me an email to get access information for our project FTP site.
I just found another great resource for information/images/drawings of Rutan/SCALED craft: http://stargazer2006.online.fr/index.htm

Yes it is open ended - meaning: Anyone in the global modo community can join and contribute at any time!
You join by sending me an email and telling me what you would like to build and donate to the project.
I create a folder for you in our group projects FTP site - then give you access. You also get access to everyone else's folders for the RAC and the SDAM community projects. You are free to use all the content in all these folders for personal use and education. If you wish to use any content for commercial purposes I will help you contact the artists to get permission for that.
In the SDAM project we limited selections to one of each craft found in the San Diego Air & Space Museum (or a selected part of the museum itself). We did this so we could get as much of the museum modeled as possible in time for SIGGRAPH 2007 - and it was a great success!
This RAC project does not have such a specific goal. However, completed and near completed projects are shown at Rutan and SCALED public events.
So anyone can model any craft they choose - even if someone else is already doing the same craft. Every artist puts his/her own stylistic touch into their own models - so we don't really end up with duplicates. Unlike the SDAM project, this time we encourage artists to give the ships their own artistic touches - even if it ends up wildly unrealistic and/or whimsical. It would be great to have a full collection of very realistic models, but it would be fun to see some creative variations too. The ship you choose could even be a "Rutan Inspired" craft that someone else designed in real life or one you create yourself. If you are more interested in painting, texturing and rendering than modeling, you could even select a model built by someone else and give it a new paint job.
The san diego modo user group is all about learning and sharing modo, and our community projects try to encourage that way beyond our local group - to the entire global modo community!
