What do you guys out there really do? Do you use Poser or you simply model the entire Human figure from ground zero??

Personaly IMO, I don't like to use Poser as I don't FEEL that the final art is totaly my work at the end.

Just wondering what do you feel and see about this.

I also prefer to model characters from scratch, but when a client wants a realistic generic character I don't mind using poser models. Even though As a CG artist you spot those from a mile away.

But just like with hard surface models like cars, boats and stuff, it's pointless to charge a client thousands of bucks for something he can already buy online for a fraction of the price.

Besides that, very often a client does not have the budget for me modeling several realistic characters from scratch, so by using Poser models the job suddenly becomes feasible.

But I agree, it feels kind of cheap ;-)

If you ignore for a moment the 'look' of the Poser content, surely the principle of using ready made stuff like Poser figures is no different from using ready made shaders or textures from someone like Null Institute? Isn't that 'cheating' too?

Sure, you could do every step yourself but it would take time, either diverting you from other aspects of the project or time you're not going to get paid for.

I put a Poser figure Pilot into the plane I modelled for the Aerospace project, it didn't hurt a bit ;-) He looks a bit wooden, but I doubt I could have done a less wooden job if I'd done it from scratch.

Incidentally, I see e-frontier has announced Poser Pro, including features like direct export to apps like 3dsMax, Lightwave etc.

Come on guys, you can spend the whole day debating/echanging knowledge and point of views and only two people gave their opinions in this matter?

So, what is your opinion regarding abour Poser versus building your model from scratch?

Had to make a decision along these lines recently and I opted to model from scratch in modo and finish up in zbrush. The pose required both arms raised high above the head and Poser just wasn't cutting it, I had crazy things happening at the shoulders anytime the hands went above the head, clothes were not conforming properly and for me the real problem was the topology on export made it rough to manupilate geomentry in modo.

I think with the upcoming release of modo, starting from scratch in modo will be an easier decision to make.

Once you have a couple of good base figures, especially if they are rigged & ready to go, you can reuse them with minor changes, and they will be a lot neater than a poser figure meshwise.

As a hobbiest i would find myself a cheater if i wouldn't have modeled it from scratch. But i can understand that in a professional context someone would use standard models.

An exception could be to use a base mesh when you want to completely change it with sculpting.

First of all I prefer the figures from DAZ over the ones that come with Poser.

As for using them; I'm all for anything that will get me the result I want faster or easier. If the computer could read my thoughts and render the images directly from my mind to the screen I would be delighted!

It just depends on what your goal is. I'm currently focused mostly on animated film making (not with modo obviously). If I was a director of live action films I wouldn't insist on building all the sets and props myself, sewing all the costumes myself, and so forth. I'd buy or rent those things and just put them in my movie. I see digital film making the same way. I view the DAZ models like props in a film.

On the other hand if you see yourself more as a "sculptor" then the model itself would be the work of art so I guess you'd want to do everything from scratch.

Other people may be somewhere in between.

I've seen this subject come up many times in threads in other forums and usually there are a lot of people who can't seem to understand that "art" is not any one thing or one approach but something that depends on what the artist is trying to accomplish.
