That would be fun. It also occured to me that you could array a lego block and this would work the same way. You'd have to set the array so that the blocks were staggered though. An interesting thing to try.

You wouldn't be able to instance the cubes because there needs to be "real" geometry for the stencil operation to work with.
The cubes could be any shape although the stencil operation can get quite slow with a high density array so best to keep the shapes simple. Lego should be fine though.
