I'm guessing here, but I believe it's a way to render your animation based on what your scene looks like in your view port as opposed to a "full render" with lights, etc.

I'm one of those people that is curious as to why Z should be up, I mean.. aren't they all just arbitrary variables anyway? you could model with X up if you felt like it and then rotate your model to being Z or Y up... or vice versa... so could someone explain why it would matter... like if theres a real reason for it or is the Z up thing just Pixar being different to be different?

A little more significant than if Pixar wants it Pixar gets it, is that in the majority of the ArchViz industry being heavily Autocad based, Z is up. Architects are primarily concerned with floorplans which are normally draw on the floor as x & y coordinates with Z going up vertically. Really doesn't matter but helps with not messing with your mindset and the way you have been working for years.

Thanx Brad. After I saw what you guys have done in Modo 301, I decided to go and buy Modo 203 and ofcourse I will also buy the upgrade to 301. I had some long list of wishes which are now implemented in modo 301, so no reason for me to hesitate any longer. And as always I love your friday Modcast. I'm almost addicted to it. ;-)
Cheers

Not only is it good for the mindset, but if you are writing scripts etc, it can get quite messy. Also, a simple rotation of a mesh isn't so bad unless you are pushing hundreds of meshes around on a daily basis. :)
There are many Z up examples. Pixar was just the most fun to reference. (Chronic name dropping!)

Wow, it just keeps getting better :D The MDD files and seeing things in motion in modo is pretty sweet! Elegantly simple. Modo has such a beautiful GI preview as well. So slick to just whirl the viewport around with everything in motion. Great job Yazan! Can't wait to see that rendered out in all of its modo render glory. I love that chicken. Exciting stuff!
