Joe and Lex (LightWave group members) will be doing all the rigging and animation for this project. The robot just has the same basic parts that a human character has, so a standard rig from Motion Builder will be used. The robot should be easier to animate because it is all hard body (no soft deforming parts).

I was trying to be original and keep the robot ready to race - since he is a race car. His configuration is kind of like a guerilla on roller blades. He also has jets in the trunk, so he could bend over and blast forward or stand up and take off if the animators so choose. The action in the script does not currently call for him to move forward much - just step around in place and fight with the driver of the other car, so the wheels will not necessarily have to rotate at all.

I am still waiting for word from the animators on how to proceed. I may go ahead and finish the last few details, but I need to do the other car (1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 Fastback), so I need to get started on that next.

Here is a render of the 2 cars I have done in 3D so far (the Charger and my 1997 Ford F-150 Lariat)...

Thanks all!
My next car will be a 1970 Ford Mustang Mach 1 - yellow with black stripes (also for our group short film).
Here is the last piece for this robot that is required for the script...
It is a laser sward, but functions a bit more mechanically than the ones in Star Wars (uses a solid tip plate and a solid core tube that periscopes out from the handle.

Well, I tried to do a morph pose of the robot - kind of a relaxed athletic stance. It was much harder than I expected to get the right rotation axis for each joint. Maybe I need to learn some more tricks!
Then, after tweaking all the parts, I discovered that somewhere in the middle I turned off the morph map, so I had changed all the original 'T' position and cannot go back! Grief! But at least I had backups! :-)

That's it! I'm out of here ! You guys are crazy !

Absolutely Amazing work Jeff.

Just wondering where do you guys get all this time to do all this.

Fantastic work really. Love it. Just don't like the purple. I would change it to metalic light gray. Just a personal taste.

Unbelievably amazing work...

I started a new thread for the development of my 1970 Ford Mustang Mach-1 Fastback - Funny Car (companion for this Charger) here:

http://forums.luxology.com/discussion/topic.aspx?id=15166

I may come back to this thread afterwards with some more morph targets and maybe some new surfacing.

Thanks to all of you who helped keep me motivated to finish this!

Hello All,
I realize this thread is several months old.
I belong to dodgecharger.com, & this thread wound up on that 'site just today. Jeff, the car you modeled your Transformer from happens to be MY CHARGER!!! VERY COOL, indeed.
That picture you posted was taken at an AACA meet in Dover, DE. That is without a doubt my car, too many tell tale signs.

Will these be actual toys for sale to the public? When will they be available, & how can I get one??

Really great work you've done!

Thanks,
Bill

I exchanged email with bill440rt as we discovered that it was his real Charger that was the primary inspiration for my model. He was very disappointed to learn that this was a just-for-fun project that will not be produced as a real toy. Sorry Bill! It would be a fun toy in real life though. ;-) I sent him some high-res images of my model to print for his young son.

More recently I built a couple more models (one still in progress) for this same Rainy Day Race project...

Today I rendered the following image of my Charger with a posed version of Jack - the 12-year-old driver character in our Rainy Day Race 3D animation group project. All of the characters for our project are modeled and rigged by Joe Philips and Lex Wolfcraft in LightWave. I am modeling all the cars in modo.

Great effort and work there Jeff, but my only issue is that it walks on wheels. It just doesn't seem to fit right. But hey, it's your robot and you did a great effort in pulling it off.

Great project, Jeff!

The modeling looks great, and it looks like you're well on your way with the transform details. Looks like a fun project, and we're all looking forward to the final animations.

Well, thanks, but I did this a while back and our LightWave group that was going to do the animated short just got too busy to continue on a project just for fun, so this and the two other cars I did for the project have been sitting on the shelf for nearly 2 years!
It is REALLY hard to keep an ambitious volunteer group project together!
