Well, after a few weeks work on and off I feel I can finally release this as a public beta. Here is a plugin for maya (compiled for 7) to load your LXO files directly into maya. It supports things such as UVs, morph targets, instancing and selection sets. Docs are in the zip file.
Let me know what you think.
Both Mac and Windows versions are supplied.

Any chance of having it compiled for Maya 5 on Windows? It would certainly be useful for my University work.

Eric is THE MAN!
When he decided he was going to make this thing.. he asked me to help him with some initial testing. I don't think he knew what he was getting himself into when he picked me though :)
I went crazy digging up 10 year old content and crazy huge data sets to throw at it... and of course making all kinds of kooky feature requests.
But in the end he kicked butt and made a tool that handles everything pretty cleanly... and with a lot of great options too! I have used it at work, with large production models, and it has worked flawlessly.
So again... great job Eric!

Eric - This is what you get when you try to load this plugin in Maya 8.
// Error: Plug-in, "LXO2Maya" was compiled against too old a version of the Maya API and is thus incompatible with the current Maya version. (LXO2Maya) //

I think Eric has given himself a job for life here.
After many years of Maya usage in a large studio one soon learns that third party tools almost never work across versions. Updating to the latest Maya was always a contentious issue. You're a brave and courageous man sir!

True....as least as plugins go, but mel scripts seem to work in most, if not all versions of Maya...but I bet you already knew that Mattoo! :-)

This is a great idea! Unfortunately, I'm very new to Maya, so the gap between page 1 of the instructions (installing the plugin, which is no problem) and page 2 (selecting options in the import dialog) seems large to me. How do I make the import dialog show up? It's apparently not automatic, (doesn't show up after File>Open or File>Import) and not obvious to me. Do I need to edit menu layouts, run it from the command line ... ?
Thanks, Evan

The docs were written assuming the person using LXO Loader was already comfortable with Maya.
That said... when you go to import a LXO ( file> Import ) select the little box to the right of the title there and it will open the options (make sure to drag the panel out larger, a lot of times it opens up so small you can see the LXO Options). Another option is after selecting "Import" click on the "options" button that is in the lower right hand side of the file requester.
