Set myself a challenge of modelling a portrait of Picasso. I think I've sort of captured certain aspects of him. Things will change a lot as I get him textured and give him some hair! Still as a head it's ok. The displacement map was painted in Modo.

Good start Andy. How do you plan to do the hair? Mesh Paint?

Meshpaint and a lot of luck, we'll see what happens. Luckily he's quite bald!

I've been looking at a picture of Picasso on the web. I think you have captured the look of his face very well. The nose and lips and chin and eyes all have the appearance of him.
My only nitpicking is the forehead looks a bit pumped up. He has a slim build so it looks like his forehead and temples should be more slimmer than the back of his head. At the moment it looks like the forehead is missing a few undulations.
But I would be very pleased to get such a good likeness to someone from a photo. Good stuff!

Mr. Andrew Brown,
I have seen your work and contribution to the community for which I am very thankful to you. I hope to do all of your tutorials and learn from them.
I am in no way to critique your work, its the shirt on Pablo seem only to me very modern like Armani or DKNY thats all /: .
This 3D world is amazing. There are no ending to what one can do. I wonder if he was alive and offered Modo program, what would he create ?
Thank you.

Great start Andy! The likeness is there for sure, though I do agree with Stu regarding the forehead. I look forward to updates. :)

Thanks for the comments.
Luxology, please, please, please, please get hair and fur into the next release! It's murder doing it with geometry and I don't want to have to fart around with Sasquatch.
Managed to do the hair on his head. Still got his eyebrows and eyelashes to do, but I though I'd post to show the main reference image I'm using and how I did the hair. I remodelled his forehead quite a lot and his nose needed altering, but he looks less like a retired nightclub bouncer now!
Loads to do!

A bit crosseyed, perhaps?
You're courageous to have attacked the hair that way. I second your request.

Yeah, the eyes are a bit funny.
If you don't mind I'll hazzard a bit of a critique. I'm no where near the 3D artist you are but I know a thing or two about portraiture.
I'm not getting the feeling of saggy skin esp. around the eyes, the jowls and the neck. The eye area is the most important since it is where we all look first. The eyes establish our relationship with the person/portrait. So.. what I need to see is some "poofyness" and the skin sag at the corners of the eyes. The jowls could be pulled up and to the back just a bit.
And the top of his head, we all have a little depression at the top of our heads where all the bones fuse. you don't normally see that because of hair, but.. papa ain't got none here.
BTW, didn't someone else do Picasso? I'm spacing on who that was... sorry.

Fantastic job! Kudos on the hair.
He is missing a secondary crease along the outside of his mouth/jowles that give his face added definition/sharpness. Or actually the jowels that you have (the outside line) need to go a bit higher up to his cheek bones below his eyes. - A small tweak with the soft drag tool with fall off should do the trick i think.

Thanks everyone for your helpfull and supportive comments. I have to say that, hand on heart, this is the hardest 3D project I've done. As far as getting it to look like Picasso I think I'll give myself 3 out of 10, but as an image of a head I think it eventually came together. It definately helped to move my technical abilities on a bit, even though I felt like launching my computer out of the wondow at one point.
I had terrible trouble with the eyes, but the most frustrating bit was once I applied the displacement map the face became pumped up to the point where the likeness I had achieved with the model became distorted. Anyway here's the very final image.
Thanks again
Andy

Nice Andy. I think you deserve more than a 3 out of ten, it's recognisably Pablo, a bit younger and more well fed than the reference maybe :)

very nice work Andy,
and yest that must have been very difficult, there is still something, that seems a bit... but i do not know what it is.. or......... maybe his skin (and hair) is a bit to "dry" looking? he needs a bit of body-milk;-) yes thats it!
Greetings!
