heh, this is cool. All I can think about is how difficult it would be to make that metal one for real

I like it.
There is a Graffiti documentary "Style Wars" that was made in the 80's - when it was re-released on DVD they caught up with some of the artists. One of them had actually moved into Sculpture using the graffiti forms. Another has gone into Toy design.

I'll try that. I fear the render times, but it might be worth it.

The last two are actually the base forms for the first one. I started them by drawing with the pen tool with make quads in subdivision mode on a orthographic plane. This is a genius addition to 202 by the way. It's like illustrator, except you end up with a model that's all quads, and can be twisted and tweaked in all three dimensions. After that I use the thicken tool, then loop slice the sides/top/bottom, to harden the edges (the second one I actually did first, and was very straight forward tube tool, and sketch extrude). From here I can add more with the sketch extrude, and the bridge tools. Once you have a part, you can twist and tweak with various falloffs, and rotate scale and move tools. To make the first and third piece, I used different combinations of instant duplicate tools. For example the strip in the background of the first one is just the plaid looking piece shrunken down, and instanced with the scatter instance tool, then rotated, and flattened a bit. I was surprised at how effective this was. You can also make chains with the curve instance tool, that are quite effective. I tried an array, but it slowed things way down, and looked too regular. I might try it again with a jitter later. Parts of it did look pretty cool.

Yeah I remember the original, I'll have to track down the DVD.

Nicely done Stout, I'm a regular reader of the graffiti mags and have seen more and more 3d pieces shown. I love it.
I have always loved wildstyle and it really lends itself to 3d modelling. It's funny how artists used to spary the walls and emulate 3d , now 3d modellers are emulating what gets sprayed on walls.
Great!

Great!
I've been continually blown away at how usefull modo's tools are for this type of modeling. They have a similar flow to drawing on paper, but are infinately more flexible once you have a shape laid out. I've tried this stuff in Illustrator, and had good results, but this is way more fun. I wan't to do some more traditional wildstyle lettering here soon. Still 3D, but with more emphasis on the lettering. I'm still exploring techniques at this point.

Here's another render with glass textures. At first I didn't like it as much, but now I think it's pretty cool.

Hey Stout Nice work! Really Dope!!!...Im a Graff artist, I been writing LIFE since 1992 (14 years) ....It's cool to see another cat out here doing graff styles with Modo! I too am building a few 3d Graff Models. Here a few wips. The models were created pretty quick while learnign tools but I plan to go All Out soon. You inspire me finish my Graff model! ..every model is a learning expereience! I def agree, you should add more letter forms in the pieces...cool ....Keep rockin! LIFER

Sick, I'm glad I started this thread. Your "Life is really tight. I like the simple flowing style. Make sure you post some renders when the L is integrated into a word.
I started with letters today. I got a "modo" rendering right now. It's kind of cool, it's sitting in the ground in a pic' I took in a park when I was in New York (I live in a small ski town in Alaska. Though we aren't without hip-hop, Atmosphere is playing a mile up the road on Sept. 2). I'll post it as soon as it's done.

Here's some lettering. A little tribute the the software that makes it all possible. Yeah, it says "modo". Thanks guys. Needless to say this is a lot of fun.

Edit:New picture. Tweaked the model and the lighting a bit.

Lol, I'm listening to Atmosphere right now... :O Stout the glass one looks great, reminds me of candy... I think you should add some texture patters to the modo one, the M doesn't stand out too much..
Brian Sick is right! The L wip looks crazy man. Zoo York man! :)

Yeah, the m got kind of obscured there. I just fixed all that. I also fixed some lighting issues. I think it looks better now.

I've always loved the grafitti styles. Turning it into 3D is just genius. Some great work in this thread.

Should be wild with some of the modeling features in MODO:202! Cant wait! Keep rockin!

This is really cool stuff... you can play around with gradients based on incidence angle, slope, etc. and come up with intertesting colors:
